I’ve been drinking water from the tap for at least 10 years but I’ve completely sworn off plastic bottles in the last year, as well as my plastic Brita filter that I had been using. But the quality and taste of the water where I live isn’t amazing and I definitely wanted to find a way to filter it more sustainably, that’s when I found this Black&Blum charcoal water filter.
It’s not completely zero waste because the charcoal stick comes in vacuum plastic packaging. But compared to a regular water filter it’s a lot less plastic waste! And there is no plastic directly touching your water. This way of filtering also lasts a lot longer, one stick can filter a pitcher of water for 6 months. After 3 months you have to boil the stick to get rid of residue, but then you can use it again. You only need two sticks to filter your water an entire year!

The stick is just pure charcoal and it’s very sturdy so you don’t have to worry about it breaking off and ending up in your water. But if it did, it wouldn’t be harmful for your health.

I use this IKEA pitcher and fill it with water every evening, you get the best results if the stick can work its magic for at least 8 hours. Fewer hours will also work, but it won’t have the full effect.

I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and you can see a little bit of residue on there, but it’s barely noticeable. When it’s time, I will boil it and then it will work perfectly for another 3 months.

I’m super happy with this more natural and sustainable approach to filtering water, I’ve even been drinking water more often and I’ve been feeling great! The water tastes much better as well. If I ever find a brand that sells these without plastic packaging, I’ll buy those, but for now I’m happy with this one!

Thanks for reading!
Love, Christine

  1. wow six months is a very long time! I'd have to look into it, but I still have a lot of Brita filters lying around…
